BC Chapter Update:
The current IR job market was the subject of timely remarks to the BC Chapter by Korn Ferry colleagues John Jennings, Senior Client Partner and Belinda Marsh, Senior Associate. As we know, IR positions in the resource sector are being consolidated, outsourced and, in some cases, completely eliminated, given the current commodities market. Few opportunities are readily available in Vancouver and on the rare occasion when one comes up, the calibre of applicants is very high.
Jennings and Marsh stressed that the best way to remain on headhunters’ radar and really stand out is to actively and efficiently grow and use personal networks. From an executive search perspective, a person who comes highly recommended by a reputable source in the right network has a competitive advantage. The power of traditional networking (face-to-face) still outweighs social media when it comes to value creation.
In addition, volunteering for professional organizations (like CIRI), as well as working on not-for-profit Boards, shows a willingness and desire to learn. This can be a valuable tool in expanding personal connections and demonstrates the drive to continue professional development.
Self-reflection is an important area for job seekers to consider as well. Take a look at your current position and evaluate what you most enjoy doing. This can be a catalyst for finding skills that are transferable to a related role and can open doors to a different career path in a difficult job market.
Alberta Chapter Update:
The CIRI Alberta Board met over the summer to complete plans for the 2015-2016 program.
Our Golf Getaway was held in July at Shaganappi Golf Course. Approximately 20 members participated in a nine-hole golf game, which was followed by a barbeque at a Chapter member’s house. The format of the event was well received and provided attendees with a great networking opportunity in an enjoyable social environment.
